Sermon Notes:

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. Daniel 1:8 NLT http://bible.com/116/dan.1.8.NLT

Have you ever lost something or someone who was important to you?

Historical condition

    • How they got here
    • What is happening at the time
    • Babylon – The worldly kingdom
      • Instrument of correction

The people of God lost it all!

  • Family,
  • friends,
  • homes,
  • identity
  • They knew that God abandoned them

How can you prosper in a place or season of disparity?

  • Many cannot come back from a place of loss
  • Can’t or won’t forgive others, themselves and especially God

As Babylon Captives:

“Select only strong, healthy, and good-looking young men,” he said. “Make sure they are well versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to serve in the royal palace. Train these young men in the language and literature of Babylon. ” Daniel 1:4 NLT http://bible.com/116/dan.1.4.NLT

  • Babylon had an assimilation mentality
  • Me them know OUR culture, OUR history.
  • It was easy to lose your identity in an evil and corrupt culture.
  • But in the land of evil, Daniel and his friends did not defile themselves.

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself

Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself

  • King Nebuchadnezzar didn’t know, Daniel proposed in his heart, but God knew
  • The Palace officials didn’t know, but God knew
  • The other captives did not know, but God knew

Can you hold on to what you have been taught?

  • In the middle of loss, can you hold on?
  • In the midst of pain, are you moved by what you feel?
  • If we are going to survive in an evil and corrupt world, God needs to go from head knowledge to personal experience
  • Can you maintain your integrity, when everyone one else is compromising?
  • If you can hold on in a wicked and perverse generation and not defile

When you purpose in your heart to acknowledge God even when things are not going your way, you can have victory in difficult of life.

  • God sees even when others don’t
  • He sees the purpose of your heart, even when others walk out on you
  • He sees your faithfulness to him, even when others are not faithful

God was with them, even through the difficulty, because He had a plan for them!

  • God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams. Daniel 1:17 NLT http://bible.com/116/dan.1.17.NLT

  • God Gave them… They did not have it before they got here
  • God enabled them to honor him in this ungodly culture

The 10 fold favor of God working in your life

Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom. Daniel 1:20 NLT http://bible.com/116/dan.1.20.NLT

  • If you can keep your integrity, God will give you wisdom to receive answers from him
  • If you refuse to compromise who you are, and what you believe, God will give you favor with people in positions of authority
